gm ten is proud to present the work of Eico Hanamura. She is one of the forerunners as a mangaka (comic artist), setting the foundation for girl’s manga in Japan. She has just celebrated her 50th anniversary in the business with her art. Starting December 20, the exhibition will open under the theme of fluttering emotions called “A. Tokimeki series”. As a first of the series, we will focus on her original work from her manga series published in magazines from the 1960’s and 70’s, as well as original drawings that once adorned the covers of “showa note” notebooks and dress-up doll cutout books. Eico’s world, with her ever-smiling girls gleaming with innocence and twinkling eyes, stands with such presence that will surely attract us today. From January 13, the exhibition will be re-dressed as “B. Jyo-jyo series”, introducing the artist’s more lyrical side. The beautiful women drawn are known for their forlorn gaze and downcast eyes. Here, the focus will be on her decadent and lyrical world, introducing more of the mysterious aspect of her work. Last but not least, the last changeover for the show will be for “C. Imadoki series”. This series will focus on many of her new works, where she has, not limiting herself to the world of manga, allowed her creative instinct to flow freely into different fields such as illustration and poetry.

We hope you will enjoy the many different worlds of Eico Hanamura.

Eico Hanamura
As a mangaka, she is one of the pioneers of manga culture in Japan. She is the director of the Japan Cartoonists Association and a full-fledged member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (SNBA). Often referred to as “ the queen of girl’s manga”, her importance to the world of manga cannot be dismissed. Eico’s first manga, called “the Purple Fairy”, appeared in 1959. “A Path to the White Flower” published in the magazine Nakayoshi in 1963 was actually the first work in the genre of girl’s comics. Her illustrations were printed on stationery such as colouring books, sketch books and pen cases. They became very popular among the young and curious. Eico transformed her manga style as her readers matured and she continued to work with many manga magazines and ladies magazines, such as “Josei Seven” and “Shukan Josei”. Some of her recent manga has been based on famous mystery novels and literary classics. In 2008, the “Eico Fair” was held in Le Bon Marché in Paris, France, where her illustrations and products adorned with adorable girls aroused much interest. And in 2009, she welcomed her 50th anniversary as a mangaka where her autobiography was published. She has recently collaborated on CD covers and music videos for Japanese singers such as Yajima Beauty Salon and Ai Otsuka
